Abstract:

The article discusses the conceptual aspects of the theory of spatial development and presents two groups of definitions of the term «space compression ». The spatial transformation of Sverdlovsk oblast under the influence of Yekaterinburg and mining and metallurgical agglomerations is analyzed. Cartographic materials illustrating the municipalities of the region are provided to characterize the changes in the concentration of population, retail turnover and investments in fixed assets. To evaluate the influence of agglomeration processes on socio-economic development of the region, the author uses the factor evaluation method, offers an algorithm for calculating the resulting indicator of agglomeration development, i.e. imputed gross agglomeration product. A numerical example for Yekaterinburg and mining and metallurgical urban agglomerations is given. The positive and negative aspects of space compression under the influence of urban agglomerations are indicated.
