Authors:

Aleksandr I. KOVALENKO Cand. Sc. (Econ.), Associate Professor of Theory and Practice of Competition Dept.

Abstract:

The article deals with the theoretical analysis of the mechanism of multi-sided platforms. The author explains the reasons behind the fact that Porter’s five forces model, as well as the concept of value chain and the sustainable competitive advantage model cannot be applied for the constructive study of competitive actions of multi-sided digital platforms. To describe and examine such platforms, the author suggests using the concepts of cooperative competition and value-creating network. The paper characterizes three main competitive dispositions with multisided digital platforms involved. The author concludes that, according to its current development stage, the phenomenon of multi-sided platforms can be regarded as a pattern of the essential facilities available to any market participants.
