Abstract: The analysis of functional models of passenger air transportation market that are used in the world practice is carried out and their main features are highlighted. The author examines the influence of deregulation processes in the industry on the transition from the paternalistic model to the liberal or mixed one. The implementation of the liberal model in Russia is considered as an effective tool for enhancing competitiveness of domestic carriers.
