Abstract:

The paper is devoted to the problems associated with approaches to valuation of assets, which in turn cause financial statement misreporting and distortion of financial results of a company reducing its investment attractiveness. The authors examined various approaches to the definition of assets and analysed types of valuation applied to assets in accounting in Russia. Particular attention is drawn to the legal framework of the problem. Based on the analysis of Russian accounting standards, a classification of asset valuation was proposed. The use of this classification will allow improving representativeness of information in the financial statement which can intensify investors’ interest. Orientation towards international standards distinguishing fair value as the leading valuation is recognized as the priority direction for development.
